Latest numbers: 463 locations, 7410958 bytes (16006 per location). I'm surprised I got near 200 kB done this month, as I only spent about two weeks writing new code in the game. The rest of the month was spent on more testing. I had just finished most of the work for a particularly detailed and thickly-puzzled phase of the game, so I thought it would be good to do another play-through. Up until the end of this point (70% of the way through the game, perhaps?) the game is complete enough that I could write a walkthrough without having to worry about changing too much later. Good news: no gameplay bugs at all on that play-through, which took at least 10 days. I think I can go a lot easier on testing for some time now.

That walkthrough is up to 449 kB and doesn't even nearly cover everything I've written so far (as I mentioned in some other post, there's a lot of material I had already written that was moved to very late in the game). In the end it may be over a megabyte.

In the next month I'll be moving into the next phase of the game's storyline, which will be a little less complex but probably just as long, so it should take at least nine months. After that it's all downhill (though still on the order of a few months) as I wrap up the end of the story. Then it'll be several (6+) more months as I go back and fill in details, more options to try in places, NPC conversations, in-game graphics, and the like (it's a big game; I really do think it will take this long for this step). So if all goes really well, I might have the game ready for Sam to start testing in around 18 months. Add several more months for the soonest possible release date.

Now shooting for Summer 2005.
