King Solomon's Mines (1937)

Reviews and Comments

This early screen version of H. Rider Haggard's novel is lesser known than the Stewart Granger version made thirteen years later and slightly less faithful to the book. But it makes for a remarkably satisfying adventure film nevertheless. Paul Robeson steals top billing as Umbopa and proves himself a powerful actor with a commanding performance. Cedric Hardwicke plays Allan Quatermain, and Anna Lee is Kathy O'Brien who hires him to find her lost father. A great, underappreciated adventure film.
