Hercules and the Lost Kingdom (1994)

Reviews and Comments

Though it's a big improvement over its predecessor, this second of the five Hercules: The Legendary Journeys made-for-TV movies still doesn't quite work. Anthony Quinn is outstanding as Zeus, but too good in a way, as the charisma of his performance illustrates how lacking it is in the other performers. Not that Sorbo isn't likable and Renee O'Connor (playing not Gabrielle but someone else) isn't spunky -- but Quinn alone takes the cheerily facile dialogue and actually makes it convincing.

The adverb "cheerily" is a good word to use for this film, and indeed the whole series, perhaps ideally with the word "campy" after it. For fans of cheerily campy fantasy, this will probably be entertaining, if only just.
