Subject: Fantasy novelist's exam Date: Wed, 08 Dec 2010 16:03:59 -0500 dear dave and sam, regarding question #51: do you ever use the term "mana" in your novel? did i fail #51 or did you? i used the word "manna" a couple of times, spelled correctly. You guys spelled it "mana," so do we take you literally--in which case i passed!--or have you made a typo? in which case i'll have to ditch the darn novel and start over. and what luck(#55), my horses only run for about three hours one night. Whew, that was close! Otherwise, I shined. No almosts or maybes. Formulaic is archaic, like vinyl. There are still some enthusiasts but ... iPods are required now. I'm going to say that you get a pass on the question if you spell it "manna" AND use its classical definition of "food from heaven." But you fail if you use it to mean "magical energy," regardless of how you spell it. We spelled it "mana" because a lot of RPGs seem to (mis)spell it that way. Actually I don't remember if that was the reason, but that's the story I'm gonna stick to. -- Sam. |
