561. You probably think you "get" David Lynch. To: dave@rinkworks.com, sam@rinkworks.com Subject: Amusing... Date: Wed, 27 Aug 2008 01:04:14 -0400 ...However, you're clearly one of those arrogant elitists that considers popular to be synonymous with cliche. You probably think you "get" David Lynch. After I finished reading your critiques of Fantasy/Films, I for some reason couldn't find the link to your awe-inspiring and breathtakingly original works that transcend everything that's ever been imagined. You might want to add those, it's rather disappointing to see that someone who's taken the time to painstakingly list everything wrong with Fantasy/Films has not put any effort towards alleviating the problem with this impressive knowledge he possesses by actually writing a novel and or film. Don't get me wrong, I agree with quite a bit of what you said... It's just that it seems you've never written a novel/film, or at least not one you're comfortable sharing, which rather cheapens your complaints. You seem to consider almost everything within Fantasy to be crap, yet offer no insight on how to improve it. Could it be that you simply don't like the genre? You could have saved me the trouble of reading 75 of your petty gripes by simply prefacing your exam with "I don't like Fantasy" instead of implying you wanted to fix it. So next time you have some free time, consider actually contributing to the betterment of Fantasy/Films as opposed to subtly bitching and whining about everything that's D&D or a sequel. Did you have it surgically removed, or were you born that way? It's a joke, man. Lighten up. Also, what is with the idea that you can't criticize something unless you're capable of doing better? I don't need to be good at baseball to be able to point out that leaving a curve up in the zone isn't a good idea. I don't need to know how to cook to be able to say something tastes awful. Furthermore, if you think we don't like fantasy, you're way off base. How do you think we even *know* about all the cliches if we haven't read extensively in the genre? And exactly how cynical do you need to be to think that we'd actually read tons of fantasy books just so we could figure out all the cliches and make fun of them? Yeah, that's how I enjoy spending my time--doing something I hate just so I can write a silly little "test" poking fun at it. Again, lighten up. It's a joke. If you don't think it's funny, that's cool. Move on. -- Dave We have this exact same conversation with people approximately once a month. |
