512. * Politics On Crazy LibsTo: sam@rinkworks.com
Subject: Fun! Date: Tue, 7 Aug 2007 00:10:49 Gee... you're site is so much fun. Can you change it to reflect both crazy liberals AND crazy conservatives? If you're as intelligent and as wide-awake as I am, you'll know that there are crackpot extremists on both ends of the political spectrum. The fact that some conservatives go out of their way to attack liberals only compels readers to think it's coming from an Extremist Conservative. Ultimately, this takes the charm away from your site as you take fun humor and place a political agenda behind it. I know you didn't mean to hurt anyone's feelings. I'm also aware that you have a great sense of humor. However, I am having a hard time finding the connection between "Crazy Libs" and "Making stories funny". I will still use your site, but I'm afraid that you may draw some people away. And I want to see a site such as yours to stick around for a LONG time! Good luck! :) From: The Rink <sam@rinkworks.com> Subject: Re: Fun! Date: Tue, 7 Aug 2007 11:14:08 Uhh...what? What on earth are you talking about? Crazy Libs has a political slant to it? What on earth, pray tell, made you think there is one iota of political editorial on Crazy Libs? Please respond. I'm insatiably curious. Crazy Libs has been around since 1998 or so, and this is the first ever complaint about politics on it I've ever gotten. In any case, *if* there were political content on the site, I really don't even care if somebody gets offended by it and leaves. If someone is so brittle as to be offended by someone else expressing a political point of view, that person deserves to be offended and deserves to miss out on the rest of what the site has to offer. People need to learn how to cope when other people don't agree with 100% of what they have to say. If people can't handle that, I'm not going to baby them, walk on eggshells, and suppress my thoughts and feelings lest I upset somebody. That would just be silly. But that's all theoretical. As far as I can tell, there isn't any political agenda at all on Crazy Libs or any other part of my site other than maybe occasional posts to the Site Journal and the Message Forum. *shrug* To: "The Rink" <sam@rinkworks.com> Subject: Re: Fun! Date: Tue, 7 Aug 2007 17:09:56 Thanks for your reply. I am probably misunderstanding something. What does "Crazy Libs" mean, anyway? From: The Rink <sam@rinkworks.com> Subject: Re: Fun! Have you heard of "Madlibs"? They were little booklets for kids where you fill in a noun, adjective, verb, whatever, and then those words get inserted into a story, which would be funny because the words you supplied would fit grammatically but not make any sense in context. I assume the word "Madlibs" is a portmanteau of "mad" and "ad-libs." But it's one of those things where it's a trademarked term, and so anybody but the trademark owner that wants to create something like that has to come up with a different term. "Crazy Libs" is mine. Nothing to do with liberals. Of course, if Crazy Libs *were* about political extremists, I'd still catch both ends of the spectrum, more or less, with that name. "Libs" could as easily stand for "Libertarians." ;-) To: "The Rink" <sam@rinkworks.com> Subject: Re: Fun! Date: Wed, 8 Aug 2007 11:54:57 Wow! Thanks for your reply. I just learned something new today re: madlibs. Please accept my apology for the misunderstanding. After your last reply, I had figured I wasn't getting something. :) |
