Subject: stupidity? Or jut plain odd. Date: Tue, 29 Nov 2005 05:55:44 +0000 Firstly I'd like to apologsie if there are typos as my s key doent work too well Secondly I'd like to tell you a story about a friend of mine. I'm not ure whether thi falls into the category of stupidity or just bizzarity, but i can assure you its entirely true. I have a friend who is something of a computer genius (and also a very rich manic depresive with too much time on his hand and a natural aptitude for engineering). When he was younger he was into hacking (as all teenage boys with even a marginal interest in computers are) and went to a lot of trouble to make sure he never got caught. As a last resort in case of police turning up at his house he wired exploives into his main hacking computer in order to destroy it. the exploive charge was connected to a large red button with "Do Not Press" written on it (in his defene he was 13 at the time.) Everything was well and good for several years but then he built a much better computer himself and decided to use that one as his personal machine - having given up hacking and other nefarious internet dealings by this point. Not wanting to waste hi old machine as it wa still good he replaced the hard drive, upgraded it and put it in the family computer room. What he did not do was remove the explosives as it is a labout intensive and dangerous process, especially considering the fact that they had been wired in by a 13 year old. So he hung a sign on the button aying "Please read this button. Please obey the instructions." Again, all wa well and good until he went away on hi gap year. About three weeks in he recieved a hysterical email from his sister claiming that he had deliberately sabotaged "her" computer and that she could have been killed. He was omewhat confused to begin with as her computer was an ibook that he had never o much a touched. Eventually however the full tory came out. It turned out that his sister had adopted his old computer as her own, going as far as to put stickers saying "Katya's computer" on the side - all without telling her brother. During the four months or so she had been using the thing she had never noticed the self destruct button until one day her friend came round and asked what it was. She said she had never seen it before and asumed it wa something her "crazy" brother had put there for a laugh. o she pressed it, with predictable results. Apparently the resulting exploion was large enough to blow the side and front off the case, all the leads out the back, scorch the wallpaper, fry the moniter and burn her hand. FOr some reason she decided that her brother (who does have a history of mental illness but ha never, o far as i know, made an attempt on someone elses life) was trying to kill her, even going so far as to try and get him committed. Luckily he was not in only in guatemala at the time but had a pefectly reasonable explanation. She is still convinced that it wa a deliberate attempt on her life, despite the fact that she knows that he used to be into hacking, and despite the fact he didn;t actually know that she had misappropriated hi old computer. Now, what the moral of this story i im not sure. The only thing I can guess is "DOn't steal your slightly insane hacker brothers old computer and if you do, read the insstrustions on the side" But then, this is the girl who believes that microsoft will have you arrested if you install any non microsoft software on a windows computer (she really, really does, Apparently I'll go to prison if "Bill Gates finds out you ue firefox!") |
