Night of the Day of the Dusk of the Watch
Anybody seen Night Watch? It's the first in an epic fantasy trilogy from, of all places, Russia. I'm sure Lord of the Rings paved the way for it, but it's not medieval fantasy at all, nor in the same elegiac style. Stylistically, the trailer reminds me of Blade crossed with The Transporter, transplanted to the genre.
Anyway, the trailer for Day Watch, part two, came out a while ago. If you want, you can go back and see the trailer for the first one. Apparently the movies need to be seen in order, but the trailers don't.
It's like Luc Besson and Tony Scott decided to team up to make a particle movie. You know, where so many walls and glass planes break apart that it's basically just a lot of particle showers. It's hilarious. I'm not sure it's supposed to be, but tell me you can't see that car-on-the-building scene at the end and keep your composure.
What's interesting to me is that this is all coming out of Russia. No matter how good or bad these movies are, Russia hasn't really ever made these sorts of Hollywoodesque special effects movies. Even speaking more generally, their film industry has not had great influence on the rest of the world, with Eisenstein and Tarkovsky being huge, huge exceptions, but exceptions nonetheless. And now, out of the blue, this dude Timur Bekmambetov brings this incredibly ambitious project to fruition, breaking Russian box office records in the process. Even if it's terrible, and I dare not hope it isn't, what a spectacular and unexpected thing.
