POA: late in the game with no cat snacks

I am almost done with the game, so spoiler space follows:

I have done everything but rescue the cat and, of course, stop Kepler.

I remember chasing the cat out of a docking bay, but I did not stop to talk to anyone, hoping to catch the cat in the corridor. (right) Now, no one in any of the docking bays will talk to me.

Caroline still won't tell me who her daddy is. The person in the arboretum who gave me the leash is also not helpful.

From looking around the hint board, I notice that everyone except me acquired "cat snacks" very early in their game, probably by talking in the docking bay. I wonder if the time where I am able to do this is gone. If so, is there another way to get the cat snacks? Or, is the puzzle optional? What should I do next?
