Don't know what to tell you, since your post sort of cuts off the only real solution, which is to try every option, if necessary making a flow chart to make sure you've tried every option in every location. The solution to the game really and truly is no more complex than choosing the one right directional option from the spot it appears. A flowchart is the best way, because you can draw a box for each distinct menu and check off the options as you try them.
