This matter is actually covered in the hints section for the game. Sam has provided good and thorough instructions on how to deal with this problem. But I'll try and touch on a few points nonetheless:

If you meet Aragh's party, run away.

Your first move after running away is to *Turn around*! I think that a lot of people don't realize they need to make that one little move. I don't know if you are one of those people, but just in case. . . .

Go down the hallway after you've turned around.

Like I said, however, Sam's instructions are more thorough -- and there's an alternate solution to the problem.
