ESM - Potentially Huge Glitch?

From looking around these boards, it seems like a certain very sharp object is needed to break into the school in the past. However, I just busted (and thus lost) that item at the vending machine before trying to use it to get in the school! Is this an actual glitch, or am I just overlooking something?
