First off, make sure you got the barrier past the sandstone cavern entrance down. It'll require turning the crank on one of the floors in the caverns, and THEN ramming the cart into the barrier. If you don't get that barrier down, the cart won't make it down to the black level for you to catch it at all. I wasted two days because I didn't get the barrier down.
As for a combination, the key to getting down in time is this: the only way to get to the western black level involves going west from a red room (not southwest or northwest, just west). Don't drop through the floor at all.
