fantasy quest - where did the bridge go?

i've just hit a problem in this game, i'm on the other side of the river and want to go back to the farm garden to get a carrot, but the bridge at the top (the one you have to keep mending yourself), isn't there anymore. i know it breaks every time you go over, but how can it have vanished completely? is there any other way to get back to the farmhousey bit in the middle, i don't seem to be able to go north from the west side of the river.
