Besides whatever's in the strategy guide, try to figure out the best minimum ratio of gold/hits per fight you'll want to accept in order to survive to explore the whole forest on most games. For the start of a game, I mean. Depending on how a particular game progresses, you may need to adjust and run from many fights that you would normally fight, or you may find yourself with such an excess of hits that you'll want to fight everything not guarding a treasure eater. It's mostly experimentation to get the numbers for your strategy fine tuned.
