And yet, all their major holidays are harvest festivals. The Jewish new year isn't really a happy time, it's a time for repentance and even more prayer than usual. The real happiness (in fact, the only holiday on which the bible tells you to be happy) is 15 days later, during a harvest festival.

So maybe the fall really is the time to celebrate, especially in places like Canada that only get one harvest.
