The date of the new year celebration is completely arbitrary, so there's no reason why it couldn't be celebrated in the fall (for example) in both hemispheres.

The tropics don't really have seasons to speak of, so they could keep January 1 or whatever date they want. That would be a nice geographical buffer between north and south.
