Stuck in Llagimlyn

I went straight to the city without going to the other building with the creatures in. I've played this before so i know you need to save the creatures but to do that i need to go talk to them. However, the portcullis is still down and i cant get out of the city and there isn't anywhere i can use the teleporting stones.

My inventory:
19 bronze coins
4 red gemstones
1 black gemstone
Guard's sword
Stone of Strengthening
Food Rations
Tinderbox
Sticks
String
Wire clippers
Portrait
Clear focus stone
Crate
Hammer
Map

Please please help me because there's no other way of getting out of the city other than through the gate which is blocked at the moment. Any help would be really appreciated!!
