What? You don't go up the pipe to get into the sandstone caves. You go up the pipe to get OUT of them.
You know when you ride the mine cart and you have to jump off before it plummets into the chasm? Have you tried switching the track so the cart goes SOUTH across the bridge... but you crash anyway?
That's because there's a piece of wood stuck in the rail across the bridge. You're going to have to go out there on foot (or hands and knees) and get that wood out of there so you can take the cart across the bridge. THIS will take you to the area where the caverns are.
