Well, don't be afraid of ruining it. For each option regarding this puzzle, there's another option that reverses its effects. So if you make a move and then realize it's not the right one, just make the reverse move.
As for the thought process needed to solve it: If working forwards gives you too many possibilities, then try working backwards from the target position. There's one position, not counting rotations and reflections, that leads to the target position, and the number of positions that leads to that position is small. Eventually you should hit upon the right solution.
