That's because you have yet to find the diagram that shows the cogwheel and the exact size needed. Examine the front lawn to find something for digging, then go back to the maze. Don't you remember that spot of packed ground that was obviously covering something buried?

You still have yet to find the papyrus and buy the cogwheel.

I don't think it matters what happens to the cake. Never stopped me from winning the game.
