the cat needs to be led "astray". I don't know if you played FQ1, but there was an item in it that could be jumped over, rolled around or wriggled thru, with no results. In FQ2, it comes in very handy, for getting that cat out of the way.
once you accomplish this, you'll find a way to help the mermaid & come up with "ammunition" for the cyclops.
