Always use graph paper when playing Murkon's Refuge. Plain undecorated paper will lead you to no end of frustration.
Also consult the game's documentation in advance to have some idea of how big the map is going to be. When playing Murkon's Refuge, I started with a 20*20 map, only to find out that the map was actually 30*20. I had to get another sheet of graph paper and continue the map over on that.
