I saw that you got over 100,000 points on EF2, which is very good considering you haven't played many games yet. I think that if you continue to play, you'll get a better feel for how much risk to take depending on what condition you're in. Really this depends a lot on whether you want to score high on average (like I try to do) or maximize your chance for a super-high score (which, being a high-risk strategy, would mean you'd die more often). Or you could change your strategy as the game progresses. Perhaps you'd play it safe for a while, and then if it looked you had a chance to score big, you'd go for it and risk letting your hits run low in the latter half of the game.

For general strategy tips and game statistics, you can look over the strategy guide that Sam wrote for EF1 (and which applies for the most part to EF2).

One specific thing that you might want to consider: it's almost never a good idea to buy bombs in EF2. There may have been one strange instance, out of nearly 1000 games, where it was advantageous for me to buy a couple of bombs, but I'm not even totally sure about that. Now I'm not saying never to use bombs, because you do find them randomly, and there's no point in having extras lying around at the end.
