found the hook, can't get into the north castle

Okay, I got the coat from the guardian's castle but I don't know what to do with it or how to get into the north castle. I've already given four coins to the soothsayer, given the dagger to the guardian, finished the garden, and also still can't figure out waht in the world the volcano is there for. Or the dog for that matter. Hints but not spoilers would be greatly appreciated.
