GOA conking out the blacksmith

Any hints on how I can get rid of the blacksmith so I can amass a crowd? (I have the ring...) I went to his shop and tried telling him my plan, talking to him, and hitting him with the butt of my sword, but if I hit him too much I die. What combo do I need? Thanks for any help...
