Okay, for this, you need the password. The man who has the password, currently can't speak. You need a magic spell to restore his voice.

You don't kill the guard. You give him something that he wants. This item you will get into the tower that you can't get into because you haven't completed the first question there.

Remember the wood sprite? What did he say when you killed him? Now, take that into consideration, and go get what you need.

You trade the leaves for the scroll. Consider the property of the leaves. Who have you met who... oh shoot, I forgot. You haven't been past the orc in teh Enchanted forest, never mind, you haven't met him yet. There's a dude DEEP in the forest who wants the leaves. He'll give you the scroll for them.

The messages as far as I know, serve only two purposes. The first is to be a distraction when you're trying to figure out passwords, and the second is that one of them hides a gold coin.
