I have yet to figure out the fortress part, since people here give weird hints.

The rabbit will help you get rid of the cat, just repeatedly select one option (cat)
The gnome will give you something to get to the fortress (at least the drawbridge) and he looks hungry, so try that. (He doesn't eat carrots, sorry)
