This isn't how it works. Gold coins don't ever just magically reappear in your inventory. You must have found another one without realizing it.

As far as the soothsayer goes, she won't tell you anything or give you anything when you give her the first gold coin, no matter what order you do things in. It's a normal part of the game. Just keep feeding her gold coins as you find them.
