Wow! I have been feeling this way for a long time!! It drives me nuts when I see a mediocre performance, and then I can't see the curtain calls while the entire audience stands up around me. Normally I sit and stew for about 30 seconds, glaring at nothing...then I give up, and stand with the rest. Of course, I only applaud half-heartedly then.

My little sister on the other hand is VERY generous with her applause. We went and saw a decent High School play, and she got very much involved in the play. At the end, she just JUMPED out and began applauding wildy. I was quite taken aback by her enthusiasm. The best I could muster was a very happy clap.

I think that when the ovation moves slowly, it is a curteosy ovation. But, if the audience just JUMPS into the air and applauds like nuts, it's a good sign.
