It's a movie serial. Look at how Phantom Menace threw the audience straight into action and adventure (or rather, ACTION! and ADVENTURE!). Introductory texts telling the viewer what went on before, screen wipes -- heck, each movie is called an Episode.

Lucas is just trying to recreate the Flash Gordon/Lone Ranger/Captain Marvel movie serials from his childhood. "A New Hope", "The Empire Strikes Back", "The Return of the Jedi", "The Phantom Menace", "The Attack of the Clones" -- they're all stupid names, yet they all sound like Republic movie serial episode names.
