One of my wife's classmates, a guy named Van, was not a valedictorian. There were only eight seniors in his graduating class. He (and my wife) graduated from an excellent small high school named Auburn High. Van never went to college, but he went to work for a large company and soon worked his way into middle management. He didn't say so, but I think he was in the upper end of middle managemant. One day, when he was attending a business meeting in Birmingham, Alabama, the gentleman conducting the meeting asked each person to rise, give their name, and their position in their company. Then he added that it would be nice if everyone told which school he attended. Van sat there and squirmed as each businessman said, "Vanderbilt," or "MIT," or "Rutgers," or "Harvard." When he finished introducing himself, Van said "Auburn," and sat down.
A short time later, the man next to him, a graduate of Auburn University, turned to Van and asked, "Where did you graduate in your class at Auburn?"
Van never blinked. "Eighth," he said.
