I've been on anti-depressants for about half my life now, but I often find it hard to stay on them. Part of me thinks I can "handle" it without the medication, and part of me just doesn't want to have to go through the hassle of getting it and taking it.

Dave, is this a seasonal thing? A lot of depression is just Seasonal Affective Disorder. Sometimes a change of climate or a move to a house with plenty of windows will help. If I got depressed, I'd look for the season connection. (I'm really cheap, and natural lighting can be less expensive than medication!) I'm sure most cases of S.A.D. are treated with a combination of medication and light therapy. I guess I'd use whatever works.
