> That's weird. There's more than one I-35, apparently. The one you're talking about goes north-south. We've got one that goes east-west through Dayton. It continues west into Indiana and then turns north, through Muncie, and up into northern Indiana, terminating somehwere in between South Bend and Gary, I think. It continues east across Ohio into West Virginia. I don't think ours is truly an interstate, but more of a state route that has the same number across several states. But we call it I-35 anyway.

Interstate highways that go east-west are even numbers. North-south interstates are odd numbers.
The numbers on east-west interstates get larger as you go north. I-10 is way down south and I-80 is way up north. North-south interstate have larger numbers as you go east. I-5 is in the west and I-95 is in the east.
Other state and federal highways sometimes have the same number, but without the "I" prefix. Interstate connectors, by-passes, and spurs usually have three numbers like I-141 and I-640
in East Tennessee. In Hawaii, interstate highways have numbers like H-1 on Oahu. The local joke is that it won't be a real interstate until the bridge is built. I don't remember seeing an interstate highway in Alaska.
