As I recall, H.G. Wells' _The Invisible Man_ also has that thing about food. The title character spends a lot of time at one point moaning that he can't eat when someone might see him, and he can't put clothes on even though it's the middle of winter, and ...

...all of which has prompted at least one expert in English Literature to write an essay studying the question of why he didn't just do to the food and the clothes what he did to himself. :o)
