  Well, i used to work for a Del Taco which had a drive through, and i've noticed that most fast-food places in my area of southern California work about the same...
  We could see when a car pulled up, but we couldn't see them once they were in front of the speaker-box.  The sensor (whether it was metal or weight) would trigger the intercom system, starting with a loud ding/beep sound and then turning on the outside mic.  We could not turn on the communications system ourselves, it was automatic.
