I suppose because I wanted to make sure it *wasn't* a fad. Now that it's clearly a tradition and not a fad, I don't mind participating. Although I've always liked it.

The other thing is, I can't tell you how many posts I've made where it actually seemed like an embedded name quote was the most effective way to express something. Too weird! So the utility of the practice helped, too.
