More Early Years: Sword of Voltar

I know I'm very near the end of the game, and now need to get back into the castle. Unfortunately I can't find the flower garden or anywhere near it. I've tried mapping the game repeatedly but the geography is too confusing. I'm at the location where the old man used to be - can anyone give me a push in the right direction?
