Paul Newman's performance as Billy the Kid somehow manages to be enigmatic and accessible at the same time -- key to the success of this gritty western. He adds some humanity to the character, playing him as a guy that probably means well for the most part but lacks scruples and self-discipline. This was director Arthur Penn's first film; it foreshadows the rest of his career.
