Tim Burton's somewhat inaccurate but nevertheless exciting adaptation of Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is a feast for the eyes. It well deserved the art direction Oscar it won for its vibrant colors, seemingly supernaturally twisted trees, creaky buildings, and misty, moonlit exteriors. The characters are as fun to watch as the set. The movie almost doesn't even need a good story to be worth watching. But a good story it has. Ichabod Crane is on the trail of the Headless Horseman, a dead assassin that rides at night and lops heads off. There's more to it than that, Crane learns after some creepy discoveries, and he gradually unwinds a conspiracy of epic proportions. The plots and secrets aren't particularly interesting in and of themselves; it's the unraveling of them that's interesting. Although it lingers more on dalliances with the occult than I would have preferred, I liked the film and recommend it.
