This clever story about a screenwriter (William Holden) simultaneously writing a film script and romancing new assistant Audrey Hepburn is a personal favorite of mine. It's one of those delightful comedies that is both overstated and understated at the same time, balancing purposefully silly obvious humor with subtlety. As the real life story and the script-in-progress unfold, the line between the two becomes increasingly blurry. The movie falters now and then, but weathering the occasional slow spots is well worth the trouble. Marlene Dietrich's brief cameo was her last appearance on film.
