This Canadian film is popular with a certain sect which I will euphemistically yet still derogatorily refer to as the high-brow art fanatic crowd. But my question is, why? If there's one good message the movie offers, it's that phony high-brow critical analysis of art, generally expressed with lots of long words, is an inadequate substitute for a pure, youthful sense of wonder at the emotions and perspectives good art has to offer. As promising as this film's premise is, however, it falls flat with an only mildly interesting story about a shy woman anxious to become one of the elitist art crowd. The film's quirky charm works to an extent, but ultimately does little more than camouflage a mediocre film with the deceptive appearance of a successful effort. Cute ending, though.
