Reviews and Comments

High Plains Drifter rough, violent western action flick. Clint Eastwood, who stars and directs, has clearly learned a lot from making the Man With No Name trilogy with Sergio Leone, as this film feels very similar in style. What Eastwood adds to the mix is an almost spiritual reflectiveness: behind all the blood is a surprisingly deep introspective meditation on moral justice. The film doesn't directly ask any questions about the moral and ethical correctness of executing justice for wrongs done to you, but the questions are raised nonetheless by the uncompromising look at the anti-hero of the film. Sometimes what Eastwood's character does here feels right, and other times quite wrong. Part of the ambiguity is that the film is cagey about telling you just who this character is, and on what authority, if any, he is acting.
