Reviews and Comments

Harold and Maude is a problematic movie for me to consider. Clearly there are moments of brilliance in it. There are some uproarious moments of understated offbeat humor and some weird yet original characters. These attributes have earned the film its status as a cult favorite. I appreciated these things. On the other side of the coin, I appreciate why it is only a cult movie: I'm not convinced this movie has as much to say as it thinks it does. What appears meant to be fraught with significance isn't, and what it does say is not particularly savory. As a funny, quaint little movie, Harold and Maude works and works well. As what this movie is trying to be, I'm not convinced.
