Destry Rides Again (1939)

Reviews and Comments

Marlene Dietrich and Jimmy Stewart head this definitive version of the classic western, Destry Rides Again. The story is both fresh and familiar -- an unimposing, genteel man who doesn't carry a gun seeks to bring order to a rough, lawless town. Jimmy Stewart shines in the role, and Marlene Dietrich, as a saloon performer in cahoots with the main villain, is fabulous. The finale is mildly clumsy, but the rest of the film is crafted with such loving care and builds up so much momentum that it doesn't matter. This is a prime example of what they don't make like they used to -- great entertainment, an intelligent plot with strong and charismatic characters, moving tragedy, and warmhearted humor -- all without hard-selling itself with shocks and imposition.
