Jet Li's only directorial effort isn't bad, but it's an atrocious movie, devoid of the charismatic center that grounds the best of his films. The fighting styles on display are a little unusual: kung fu crossed with American boxing. A fight scene around the middle is intense, although not necessarily pleasant, but the movie is relentlessly dismal and mean-spirited. The worst part is the final moment, a pitifully feeble attempt to redeem the tone at the last minute and save it from being entirely vengeful, but it doesn't work: the film -- and the main character -- has gone too far that not to go all the way is not noble, just short-sighted.
