Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey star as a pair of lifelong friends in this heavy-handed tearjerker about their friendship. Midler sings several great songs, which is a definite plus. Another is the career-making performance by Mayim Bialik (who later starred in the television sitcom Blossom) -- she looks so much like Midler, it's uncanny.

The core plot of this drama, however, is little more than a pack of cliches. There's not a lot of original material here, and at times it gets soapy. But the film is executed with such sincerity, it pulls through anyhow.
