ArtsandFaith.com is an open online community with roots going back to 1999. The website describes their purpose as follows: "A forum to discuss movies from a Christian perspective. Many Christians go to the movies more than they go to church and film has been called the most powerful narrative experience of our time. This is the place for fans, critics, and thinkers of great thoughts to hash through the implications of what they see, especially as it relates to their faith." The 'Arts & Faith Top 100 Films List' is an expression of this community's ongoing discussions about how mystery and meaning can be discerned in works of art. Voters include professional film writers and lecturers, lifelong cinephiles and ordinary movie fans, seminary-trained students of religion, believers of various stripes, and individuals of no particular faith. The first A&F list was created in 2010 and was based on the votes of 44 contributors. The 2011 list is the second edition of the A&F list and is based on the votes of 65 contributors. The website for the 'The Arts & Faith Top 100 Films' list is: http://artsandfaith.com/t100/.

The 2011 list limited each director to three films. As a result, some films by Dreyer, Bresson, Tarkovsky, Kieslowski, Ingmar Bergman, & the Dardenne brothers are not included within the 2011 Top 100 list which would have otherwise been included. Some of these extra films DID appear on the 2010 Top 100 list.

Carville personal comment - The list of films is NOT a list of "Christian" films. If it were, I would have absolutely no interest in it. The people voting on this list are obviously extremely open minded and progressive in their thinking. I love this list because it encompasses a wide range of films for thinking people interested in philosophy; sociology and humanity; concepts of God and the meaning of Life; issues pertaining to religion and religious faith of every denomination imaginable; the misuse of religion, religious dogma, and faith; and larger issues dealing with the basic fundamental spirit of man and mankind. I do not meet the fundamentalist definition of a "Christian", and also do not consider myself to be a "religious" person because I personally reject "religious dogma" and proselytizing. I instead consider myself to be a very spiritual person with perhaps a more "eastern" slant in my philosophical beliefs, and recognize that there are shared fundamental truths in all religious foundations. I am intelligent and very scientific in my thinking and believe that a higher consciousness (aka "God") does exist which permeates the totality of time, matter, space; within every corner of the universe from the tiniest building block of every atom to the universe as a whole; and within every living soul contained within the universe. This is one of my absolute favorite movie lists because I have found so many beautiful films which challenge my thoughts, help me to appreciate Life and the human spirit, and contemplate larger philosophical issues in a deeply profound way. There are many titles on this list which are not on any other film list, including some absolute jewels that I would have never seen were it not for their inclusion on this list, and which I am so grateful to have discovered. I am sharing this comment with the hope that anyone who contemplates pursuing this list will better understand what types of films are included.
