The Grand Prize of the Festival was the top prize for films in competition at Cannes from the festival's beginning in 1946 up until 1954. The Golden Palm has been the top prize from 1955 until the present. When more than one film is given for a particular year, it is the result of a tie between several movies for the award. The festival was not held in 1948 or 1950 due to lack of funds, and was canceled in 1968 because of nationwide strikes and demonstrations in France.

* At the 1947 festival, prizes were given for specific categories: "Ziegfeld Follies" won for Best Musical Comedy, "Dumbo" won for Best Animation Design, "Antoine and Antoinette" won for Best Psychological and Love Film, "Crossfire" won for Best Social Film, and "The Damned" won for Best Adventure and Crime Film.

** The first Cannes festival was scheduled for 1939, but the outbreak of World War II prevented it. In 2002, a festival jury chose retrospectively a winner from the films that would have competed in 1939.
