NOTES ON "UNDERGROUND" (1995) & IT'S RELATION TO SERBIA & YUGOSLAVIA - ALONG WITH ADDITIONAL DETAILS ON THE ACTUAL HISTORY OF YUGOSLAVIA:

* The fictional film "Underground" is set (& filmed) within the borders of the now non-existent country of "Yugoslavia" - which existed from 1918 until 1991's "Yugoslav Wars".

* WWI began in 1914 following two critical events within the borders of "Yugoslavia" which escalated into the first world wide war:

..... (1) 6/28/1914 in Sarajevo - Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria (heir presumptive to the Austro-Hungarian throne) & his wife were killed by 6 assassins (5 Serbs & 1 Bosnian Muslim).

..... (2) 8/12/1914 - WWI officially began when Austria invaded & fought the Serbian army at the Battle of Cer & Battle of Kolubara.

* "Yugoslavia" (with its capital in Belgrade - which is in present day Serbia) was created in 1918 following WWI by the merger of the following three political entities:

..... (1) provisional "State of Slovenes, Croats & Serbs", a short lived political entity created earlier in the year (1918) from territories of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire;

..... (2) the formerly independent "Kingdom of Serbia";

..... (3) the formerly independent "Kingdom of Montenegro".

* The Serbian royal House of Karadjordjevic became the Yugoslav royal dynasty, eventually resulting in the changing of the country's name in 1929 to the "Kingdom of Yugoslavia."

* The 1st (of 3) chapters of "Underground" takes place during WWII - beginning in 1941 with the initial invasion & occupation by the Axis powers - & ending with the liberation of the country in 1944/1945.

* The end of WWII saw the country of Yugoslavia enlarged slightly when it acquired the territories of Istria, Rijeka, and Zadar from Italy.

* In 1945/1946 the monarchy was abolished & the communist "Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia" was created under dictator Josip Broz Tito (renamed "Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia" in 1963).

* The 2nd (of 3) chapters of "Underground" takes place between the end of WWII and the the death of Tito in 1990.

* The "Yugoslav Wars" began in 1991 following Tito's death, & continued somewhat after the December 14, 1995 "Dayton Peace Agreement" into the early 21st century.

* The film "Underground" was shot during the "Yugoslav Wars" between fall 1993 & early spring 1995. The "Yugoslav Wars" were depicted in the film's 3rd & final chapter.

* The "Yugoslav Wars" resulted in the gradual disintegration of Yugoslavia into the following 7 different current countries (listed in order of years of declarations of independence - with capitals/largest city):

..... (1) Slovenia (1991) (Capital/largest city = Ljubljana)

..... (2) Croatia (1991) (Capital/largest city = Zagreb)

..... (3) Macedonia (1991) (Capital/largest city = Skopje)

..... (4) Bosnia & Herzegovina (1992) (Capital/largest city = Sarajevo)

..... (5) Montenegro (2006) (Capital/largest city = Podgorica)

..... (6) Serbia (2006) (Capital/largest city = Belgrade)

..... (7) Kosovo (2008) (Capital/largest city = Pristina)

* Amidst the disintegration of Yugoslavia, a temporary federation of Serbia and Montenegro was established in 1992 and called the "Federal Republic of Yugoslavia".

* In 2003, the "Federal Republic of Yugoslavia" was officially renamed/reconstituted into the "State Union of Serbia & Montenegro", which itself dissolved in 2006 into separate nations of "Serbia" & "Montenegro".

* The "Federal Republic of Yugoslavia" is listed 1st within the countries which produced the film "Underground", along with France, Germany, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, & Hungary.

* However, the "Federal Republic of Yugoslavia" technically no longer exists, except as it exists today in the form of the 2 separate sovereign countries of "Serbia" & "Montenegro".

* The director of the film "Underground" - Emir Kusturica - is "Serbian", but was born in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia (now "Bosnia & Herzegovina").

* Much (or most) of the "Underground" cast are Serbians. The 3 lead actors (Predrag Manojlovic, Lazar Ristovski, Mirjana Jokovic) are Serbians born within the boundaries of what is now present day Serbia.

* The state-owned "Radio Television of Serbia" had a small role in financing the film "Underground", and the film used rented Yugoslav Army (VJ) equipment as props.

286-57 = 229 Foreign Language SOUND Films

==============================================================================================

FOOTNOTE TAGS:

* = Director listed within two (or more) countries

# = Director listed twice within a single country under two separate sections, usually under both the SILENT column & again under a SOUND column

==============================================================================================

CO-PRODUCTIONS:

All films are placed, as best as possible (even when co-productions involve multiple countries) under the primary country of production, which is based largely on:

---> (a) Primary Language in Film

---> (b) Primary Filming Location (&/or Setting) of Film

---> (c) Nationality of Director (& perhaps cast)

---> (d) Nation Credited for 'Foreign Film/Foreign Language Film' Award Nominations/Wins (i.e. Oscar, Golden Globes, etc.)

---> (e) Nation of Production Company providing Primary Financing

Films with co-productions involving multiple countries which are not so clear are handled in one of two ways:

---> (1) Placed under "best fit" country (in my opinion) with added notes beneath film citing the following (note: examples are from Russia's "Mongol (2007)"):

----------> (a) Countries Credited for Award Considerations: example: (Oscar = "Kazakhstan")

----------> (b) [Production] Countries in the order they appear in the Details section of the film's IMDb page: example: (Russia / Germany / Kazakhstan / Mongolia)

----------> (c) Language[s] in the order they appear in the Details section of the film's IMDb page: example: (Mongolian / Mandarin)

---> (2) Placed within other geographical designation - such as "EUROPE" - for unique films which involved multiple nations in terms of productions, settings, filming locations, languages, nationality of director and actors, etc.

----------> Example = 2010's "Carlos" was a French/German co-production w/ a French director; Venezuelan lead actor (& multi-nation cast) speaking 8 different languages; set (& filmed) within multiple European, African, & Asian countries.
